The Use Of Pakem Material In Enhancing Writing Skills Using Descriptive Texts
Abstract
The study determined the effects of teacher-made PAKEM Learning Material in enhancing Writing Skills, using descriptive texts of the Grade Seven students in Muhammadiyah 2 Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Specifically, this study sought answers to the following questions: 1). What is the result of the pre-test and post-test of the control and experimental groups? 2). Is there significant difference in the result of the pre-test and post-test of the control and experimental groups? 3). What enhanced PAKEM learning materials can be developed based from the findings of the study?
A test was conducted after the experiment. The group subjected to treatment was the experimental group while no treatment was done to the control group. Using the SPSS, the T-test was computed to reveal whether there was significant difference in the pre-test and post-test scores of the control and experimental groups. Findings of the study were: 1). The mean scores obtained in the pre-test of the control group and experimental groupwere 51.33 and 62.63 respectively, interpreted as good. The scores obtained after the conduct of the treatment revealed that the mean scores of the control group was higher than before the treatment. However, the mean score was only 57.66. Comparing the mean scores of the experimental group before and after the treatment, the score was higher after the treatment indicated by 75.12 mean rating, interpreted as very good. 2). The computed T value based from the result of the pre-test in the control and experimental groups was 11.78, greater than the tabular value of 2.04 at df of 29, at 5% level of significance. Thus, the null hypothesis is rejected. Furthermore, the computed T value in the post-test of the control and experimental groups was 4.37, which is higher than the tabular value of 2.04, at df of 29 and 5% level of significance. Thus, the null hypothesis that states that there is no significant difference in the post-test mean scores of the control and experimental groups was rejected. 3). The use of PAKEM-based learning materials had increased the performance in test of the Grade Seven students’ writing skills using descriptive texts.
Based on the findings, the following conclusions are drawn:1). The mean scores in the pre-test and post-test in both control and experimental groups significantly vary. This means that the treatment or the PAKEM-based materials, had significantly increased the performance of the Grade 7 students in descriptive writing, from good to very good.2). There is significant difference in the post-test mean scores of the control and experimental groups. The treatment increased the performance of the Grade 7 students in descriptive writing.3). The use of PAKEM-based learning materials had significantly affected the performance in the test particularly of the experimental group.
From the findings and conclusions, the study provided the following recommendations:1).The selection of subjects in the control and experimental groups should be done carefully for purpose of homogeneity so that external factors may be eradicated.2). The PAKEM-based materials may be enhanced by submitting to curricular and content validation. 3). A similar study may be conducted for purposes of continual improvement of PAKEM materials. Moreover, the PAKEM-based material is recommended for use by teachers in the junior high school department.
